Hells Canyon Trips

Imagine rambling among 9,300-foot alpine peaks before descending 7,000 feet to the desert-like river bottom on trails that crisscross open, grassy benches carpeted with wildflowers of every color and course down through thickly timbered draws.

This beautiful landscape of Hells Canyon in the springtime will leave you breathless as you explore the deepest canyon in the United States. Two steep slopes are separated by bench land from Saddle Creek to Dug Bar. This bench land is found at mid-elevation between river bottom and canyon rim. The Hells Canyon Wilderness Area is 219,000 acres covered in native bunchgrass, shrubs, Ponderosa pines, and Douglas fir trees with plenty of fishing in the Snake River.

Backcountry Outfitters offers two spring trips into Hells Canyon. The Bench Trail Trip for three days and the Snake River Trip for five days. On both trips you will ride into the Hells Canyon Wilderness on horseback and spend time taking pictures, fishing, or simply relaxing under the sun. Our trips are designed for groups of six (either six in your own group or we will combine parties to form groups of six). We also have a few weeks available for specialty trips that we design with the customer.

Bench Trail Trip
Our Bench Trail Trip is three days in length and takes you halfway down to the canyon floor. You'll enjoy awe-inspiring views of the Snake River and the mountains that surround it with breaks for photography. The packer and cook provide lunches, snacks, and meals. You'll spend evenings under the stars around a campfire where you can swap stories, roast marshmallows, and listen to the coyotes sing. Each trip may vary from this description due to weather or trail conditions. Our wrangler will pick the most suitable trail for your safety and your enjoyment.
$650.00 per person for 3-day trip.

Snake River Trip
Our River Trip is five days in length and takes you all the way down to the Snake River. We will provide a packer and a cook who will provide all of your needs on the trip. All you need to bring is your personal gear. On your first day you descend on horseback to the Snake River canyon floor. We will then make two camps on the Snake River's banks where you can fish, swim, or take day hikes or rides as you desire. On the fourth day we ride up to a bench overlooking Hells Canyon and spend the night before reluctantly riding out to the trailhead the last day. Each trip may vary from this description due to weather or trail conditions. Our wrangler will pick the most suitable trail for your safety and your enjoyment.
$1,500.00 per person for 5-day trip.
